What does "solid state" mean?

Hard disks, as we now know them, are electronical devices which contain rotating magnetizable discs (so called plates) and a moving reading device (head). As the matter of fact, there are many similar storage devices: DVD and CD players and recorders, or the now obsolate floppy drives work rather similarly.

It is a well known fact that what moves goes astray sooner then what does not. CPU-s, for example, have a much longer life expectancy then today's hard disk drives. Then why do we use moving parts still?
